Mitsui Fudosan Invests in Starlight Engine, a Developer of Fusion Energy Plants, through the Mitsui Fudosan & Frontier Fund

Global Brain has invested in Starlight Engine Ltd. (Starlight Engine), a company engaged in the research, Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd. (Mitsui Fudosan) announces that, together with Global Brain Inc. (Global Brain), it has invested in Starlight Engine Ltd. (Headquarters: Ota-ku, Tokyo; Starlight Engine), a company engaged in the research, development, and commercialization of fusion energy plants, through the Mitsui Fudosan & Frontier Fund (& Frontier Fund), a corporate venture capital fund jointly operated by the two companies.

Against the backdrop of growing international momentum toward decarbonization and energy security, fusion energy has been attracting worldwide attention as a next-generation energy source capable of replacing fossil fuels, with the entry of private capital and technological innovation accelerating. Starlight Engine was founded with the aim of elevating fusion energy from the phase of experimentation into a practical, deployable energy system.

Starlight Engine has adopted the tokamak plasma confinement method—the approach backed by the most abundant accumulation of research and experimental data—and, with its compact, low-aspect-ratio “FAST Project” at its core, is advancing power generation demonstration, the development of enabling technologies, and the establishment of an industrial foundation in an integrated manner. A key differentiator is its proactive incorporation of cutting-edge reactor engineering technologies that have yet to be put into practical use in fusion development to date, such as high-temperature superconducting (HTS) coils and fuel breeding blankets. In addition, while building an industry-academia collaboration framework through corporate-sponsored research programs with universities including Tohoku University, Nagoya University, Kyoto University, Kyushu University, and Keio University, the company is also advancing, in parallel, the formation of an industrial supply chain toward commercial reactors, with companies such as Kyoto Fusioneering and plant engineering firms joining as participating companies.

Mitsui Fudosan decided to make this investment in high recognition of Starlight Engine’s management and research structure, which brings together researchers and engineers from a diverse range of specialized fields in pursuit of realizing fusion energy; its proprietary reactor engineering approach integrating cutting-edge technologies; and its end-to-end business vision spanning from power generation demonstration to the development and commercialization of commercial reactors. Through this investment, Mitsui Fudosan will actively support the early realization of fusion energy by Starlight Engine, in collaboration with a diverse range of industrial partners.
